Vehicle Cost Calculator
Understand what driving really costs.
True Cost To Drive helps you move past one generic number. Build a garage that reflects your real vehicles
Track what you already own, what you are shopping, shared vehicles, and templates in one place.
How It Works
Start with your actual vehicle setup
Fuel economy, purchase price, financing, maintenance, tire assumptions, insurance, and recurring costs all affect the outcome.
Compare across the intervals you actually care about
See the picture per mile, per month, per year, over full ownership, or over the specific trip or commute you are trying to price.
Understand why one vehicle wins
The app does not just hand you a total. It breaks categories apart so you can see whether fuel, tires, depreciation, or maintenance are doing the most damage.
Why I Built It
Most vehicle tools stop at a generic estimate. They can be useful, but they do not usually capture the specifics that actually change what driving costs you: your insurance, your mileage, your maintenance assumptions, your financing, your parking, your commute pattern, and how long you really plan to keep the car.
True Cost To Drive was built to make those choices more explainable. It is meant to help with everyday ownership decisions, vehicle shopping, pricing gig or customer work, and understanding whether a trip or commute is actually as cheap as it feels.
The goal is not to throw a wall of numbers at you. It is to make the cost stack understandable enough that you can explain the answer to yourself, a partner, a customer, or a team member without hand-waving.
What You Can Do
Calculate real cost per mile
Move past 'gas money' and see what one mile really costs once fuel, tires, maintenance, depreciation, insurance, financing, and overhead are included.
Price trips and commutes with context
Use one-off trip pricing for travel or invoices, then switch to commute mode for recurring distance and parking costs.
Useful for gig work and return-to-office math
Estimate whether your current rate actually leaves room for profit after vehicle expenses, or what commuting really costs each month.
Designed to compare choices, not just give one number
Put multiple vehicles side by side and see which one wins for ownership, commuting, trips, and fleet totals.
Generate invoices for trip work
Build one-off trip pricing, generate a customer-facing invoice, and still see your own net result inside the app before you send it.
Common Questions
How much does it cost to drive per mile?
Use the app as a cost per mile calculator and then break the answer apart by fuel, maintenance, tires, depreciation, insurance, and financing.
What does it cost to drive a WRX, F-150, or Model 3?
Use the public examples and the in-app templates to compare how enthusiast cars, trucks, and EVs can arrive at very different cost mixes.
How much does my commute really cost?
Price a recurring commute, add parking, compare multiple vehicles, and see the total per commute, week, month, quarter, or year.
Is a gig or customer trip actually worth it?
Estimate trip cost, compare vehicles, and generate an invoice while still seeing whether the rate leaves room after vehicle expenses.
How much should I charge for a trip, delivery, or side job?
Use trip pricing, invoice generation, and cost breakdowns to see whether a quoted rate covers the real vehicle expense behind the miles.
Should I keep my current vehicle or replace it?
Compare what you already drive against templates or shopping vehicles to see whether fuel savings, financing, maintenance, or depreciation really justify a change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Because the whole point is to avoid generic averages. The app uses free public information where it can, but your insurance, maintenance, mileage, financing, and ownership plan are what make the estimate useful for you. Even with paid APIs, only a few more fields could be auto-filled because this is still fundamentally a calculator built around your situation.
It can estimate cost per mile, fuel, oil changes, fluid service, tires, maintenance, depreciation, financing, insurance, registration, parking, roadside, emissions, and recurring trip or commute costs depending on what you have filled in.
No. The app is local-first. Your garage and settings stay on your device unless you explicitly share, export, or import something.
People shopping for cars, owners trying to understand what they already drive, gig workers watching profit per mile, and anyone trying to make better trip or commute decisions.
Not yet. It is in open beta, which means the core workflows are ready to use, but some assumptions, polish, and workflows are still being refined as real people use it. If I see engagement with the application, I may spend more time on polish. In the meantime, anyone I can help is a win!
What The Calculator Includes
Fuel and energy
Oil and fluid maintenance
Tires, brakes, battery, and suspension
Depreciation and value loss
Insurance, registration, and parking
Financing and total interest
Your own vehicles matter more than averages. The calculator is most useful when it reflects your annual miles, commute pattern, fuel type, financing, and how long you plan to keep the car.
Even the side metrics stay tied to the same story, which is why emissions, invoice pricing, and trip math all stay connected to the ownership model.

I wanted a clearer answer than "about this much." Most tools stop at fuel or one payment number. This app exists to show the actual moving parts behind vehicle cost so the total is easier to trust, compare, and act on.
